1. The Department of Political Science and Sociology at the European University in Saint-Petersburg opens a position of the UBS Assistant Professor/Associate Professor of Wealth and Social Power.
The UBS Professor of Wealth and Social Power would be teaching courses, conducting research, and giving counsel on various subjects dealing with the studies of social stratification with special focus on elite groups, including economic, cultural, and political elites. Ability to develop interdisciplinary approaches to the issues of wealth distribution and different forms of power combining insights from economic sociology, political economy, organizations theory, and political science would be a crucial advantage. A particular emphasis should be put on research methods, which should include quantitative methods. Expertise in data gathering (designing and testing survey questionnaires, developing coding protocols for participant observation or archival research, etc.) and contemporary data processing techniques will be an important competitive advantage. Familiarity with major publicly accessible statistical databases, including information pertaining to Russia (RossStat, Eurostat, RLMS) is a requirement.
The Professor should be able to teach M.A. and Ph.D. level courses in social stratification and quantitative methods, among others.
The principal role of the Professor would be to produce world-class research on emerging patterns of stratification, dominance, and leadership in the Russian society, on the sociological profile of the new wealthy groups, and to contribute to public discussions on the subject. He or she should also be able to provide students with practical guidance in gathering data necessary to produce world-class research on the subjects specified above.
EUSP would especially prioritize applications from candidates combining scholarly excellence with contributions to wider public discussions, regular media appearances, etc.

2. Вакансия исполнительного директора в Центре исследований науки и технологий
The STS Center at the European University at Saint Petersburg is looking to hire an Executive Director for a project funded by the Ministry of Education through a Mega Grant
The project’s main research goal is to study the population of Russian Computer Scientists in Russia and abroad (Silicon Valley, Boston-Cambridge, New York, Paris, etc). It will develop new methods in the fields of science, technology and society, diaspora studies, technology transfer, and economic sociology. The anticipated scientific outcome of the project is the publication of a series of articles and books.
The Administrative/Executive Director will work on both academic/research and administrative aspects of the grant under the guidance of Mario Biagioli and Vincent Antonin Lepinay. She/he will coordinate the various activities of the STS center (bi-annual conferences, monthly seminars, summer schools). A background in STS approaches to computer science and IT is desirable but not required. She/he will operate at the interface of the European University, the Ministry of Education and the research team. Beyond the project, it is expected that the successful candidate will contribute to building the first world class STS center in the post-soviet region.
The candidate should be available to join EUSP between late Summer/early Fall 2013. The initial appointment is for 30 months with the possibility of conversion to a tenured position after successful completion of the grant objectives and pending success of fundraising efforts.
A combination of the following skills will be appreciated:
- A strong academic background in one or more of the fields of research developed by the research team. A PhD in hand is a plus; ABD will also be considered.
- Willingness to present and promote the project in the media and to organize outreach activities.
- Eagerness to work in a competitive university with a team of international scholars and a group of motivated students.
- Experience in animating and administering a large research program will be considered an asset.
- Proficiency in Russian (expected reading and speaking, writing is a plus)
